Erskine Waterfront Campus - Careers Day 2022!

Spirits were high at Erskine Waterfront Campus (EWC) as the Scottish Fire Service delighted young people with an impressive display of their life saving equipment - "The hose is so powerful it knocks you off your feet!”

With a diverse selection of agencies in attendance, including the SSPCA, HMRC and Invest in Renfrewshire, young people were offered advice and information on potential futures at this year’s Career’s Day.

Also in attendance was Police Scotland, building on the success of the previous year’s interactions with the young people and subsequent visits into the school to hold information days.

Emma Heaney, Employability Mentor at EWC said:

“For many of the young people at EWC, The Police hold memories of traumatic times, and young people have a mostly negative view of them. However, after last year’s event, the young people were saying things about the Police that were positive and playful!  That stigma attached to the Police has altered and this year we again saw young people having fun and building positive relationships with the Police."

Emma was also keen to share the success story of a recent student who attended last year’s careers event:

“The Navy attended with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) van and a range of people in different roles, one was a female medic. Our student was able to talk and hear from someone who knew first hand and since leaving EWC in the summer, started a nautical college course at Glasgow which she will do for a year and then join up to be a medic in the Navy!”

The Royal Navy has also kept in contact with the school, providing class speakers to talk through real world applications of subjects being studied.

Building on community relationships and extending a welcome to other schools in the area, Erskine Waterfront Campus is creating a network of opportunities for the children and young people to take part in to aid the transition from school to work.

“A number of young people have been on World of Work experiences and work experience over the last year with some of the exhibitors who attended, and this coming school year three of our senior phase students will be starting work experience in the next month or so.”

Feedback from other schools that joined in the day has been extremely encouraging too, with one commenting that “many of our pupils had meaningful conversations with the exhibitors that will hopefully help them plan their future careers.”

Attended by nearly 300 children and young people, the EWC Careers Day demonstrates how CrossReach services are committed to the values of The Promise, by developing the young workforce of the future for the second year running.
