Prisoners Week Scotland - a reflection on the launch service

Sheila Gordon and Sasha Groves

Reflection from Sasha Groves, Polmont Prison Visitor Centre manager, on the Prisoners Week launch service, Sunday 20th November, Bishopbriggs Community church.

"It was heartening to see so many people coming together to mark Prisoners Week, from support organisations, the the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) and those who are interested to learn more about the impact of imprisonment on individuals and families.

We heard from ‘Sarah’ about her journey from a lifetime of bullying and abuse, to finding peace and freedom through Christ during her time in prison.

We heard from ‘Lynne’ about the financial and emotional toll of having loved ones in prison. Why does she continue to support them? Simple, she loves them.

Jill Clancy, SPS Chaplain, spoke about the Bible story of the woman bleeding for 12 years who was healed by touching Jesus’ cloak.

The isolation, stigma and trauma she experienced is echoed in the experience of individuals and families who end up in the justice system; touching Jesus is the start of healing, and freedom for us all.

We were all invited to share thoughts of our experience with the justice system on a graffiti style wall…HOPE…CONNECTION….CHANGE… just a few of the offerings.

A thought-provoking and challenging start to Prisoners Week 2022!
