Celebrating staff well-being at Williamwood House

A great working environment is not just about the physical building. It’s the support you receive, the culture within the organisation and friendships you build with those around you.

Following discussions between senior management at Williamwood House and the Health and Social Care Partnership about staff well-being during COVID-19, the well-being hub was created. The management team were awarded a local government grant and after speaking with staff, decided how the funds would be best used. During COVID-19, the home used an empty bedroom as a safe space to reflect and breathe during or after shifts. This worked so well that it was decided by all members of staff that a permanent space would be greatly beneficial to the team. Fast-forward to present day, a well-being hub was built on the grounds of Williamwood House. The hub is open most days with relaxing music and aromatherapy oils diffusing throughout the day for staff to simply take time out as and when required.

The hub was a focal point as the home recently celebrated their Staff Well-being Week. With endorsement from Williamwood House’s Well-being Champion, the Service Managers purchased equipment and hired a massage and beauty therapist for the day to give mini treatments to staff. Organised by the home’s Activities Co-ordinator, staff were made aware of the treatments available and were able to book what they wanted beforehand. Adding to the week’s festivities, were art therapy sessions which were hosted by Scott, a long-term carer at the home. Scott is an accomplished local artist, making him the perfect man for the role. The sessions took place with a few staff members at a time, painting on white tiles that had been donated to the service.

"Having the management, ancillary staff, care staff, admin staff & cooks all being creative together in that relaxed environment was so nice...there was such a great vibe throughout the whole week and the time out sessions allowed us all to get to know a bit better "the person" and not just "the colleague!"

To draw the week to a close, an entertainer was booked to play for the residents and regular agency staff supported them whilst the Williamwood House team enjoyed lunch together. The week may be over but we hear Scott and the masseuse have been booked to return to the hub for sessions with the team in coming weeks, because staff well-being is an everyday priority at Williamwood House.
